With its wine-soaked villages, art-rich cities, swathes of olive groves and truffle fields, and modern-fashion powerhouses (Gucci and Ferragamo, to name a few), Tuscany epitomizes la vera Italia.
But this central region’s most relevant role will always be as birthplace to the Renaissance, whose presence has been perpetuated over the ages by the Botticelli masterpieces on the Uffizi’s gold-gilded walls and the earthen-toned towers and palaces commanding the region’s storied towns.
Travel to Tuscany to walk in the footsteps of history...
The story of Tuscany spans more than 3000 years of art, architectural wonders, culinary surprises and warm, welcoming hospitality.
It is where art, history, romance, adventure and relaxation come together to create the perfect vacation. Florence is undeniably the capital of Tuscany, yet it is only an introduction to the diversity and beauty that exists within the region it sits in.
Tuscany is a land that was built using the local stone, marble and terracotta, creating towns and monuments that still stand tall today.
As you plan your itinerary, be sure to include the castles in Casentino, the Walls of Lucca, the towers of San Gimignano, the Roman amphitheater in Fiesole, the beaches along the coast or on Elba Island and the stunning square in Volterra.
Tuscany has a timeless familiarity with its iconic Florentine cathedral dome, gently rolling hills dipped in soft morning mist and sculptural cypress alleys.
But then, this regione in central Italy is postcard material.
Golden wheat fields, silver olive groves and pea-green vineyards marching in sharp terraced rows on hillsides form a graceful prelude to soul-soaring medieval hilltop villages, mountain ranges and fecund forests in the north, and a garland of bijou islands beaded along the coastal south.
Get out, explore, hike and ding your bicycle bell, as this rousing landscape demands.
With its manicured fields, rustic farms, cypress-lined driveways, and towns clinging to nearly every hill, Tuscany is our romantic image of village Italy.
Venture beyond the fringes of Florence and you'll find a series of sun- and wine-soaked villages, each with its own appeal.
Stretching from the Umbrian border to the Ligurian Sea, the landscape changes from pastoral (Crete Senesi) to rocky (Chianti) to mountainous (the Montagnola) to flat and brushed with sea breezes (Pisa).
Florence Art-packed, bustling city — starring Michelangelo’s David, Renaissance paintings, and Brunelleschi’s dome — with Ponte Vecchio spanning the flood-prone Arno River.
Pisa A city more famous for its iconic Leaning Tower than for its other equally impressive monuments on the gleaming white Field of Miracles.
Lucca Charming city with a lively (and flat) town center, ringed by intact old walls wide enough for biking and strolling.
Volterra Just far enough off the beaten path, surrounded by thick walls and hilly scenery, with a long Etruscan history and unusually interesting sightseeing for a small town.
Montepulciano Rugged town crowning a ridge, with dreamy vistas of the countryside and wine-tasting in inviting cantinas.
San Gimignano Epitome of a hill town, spiked with medieval towers offering superb views, popular with tourists who crowd the narrow alleys by day.
Montalcino Wine-lovers’ paradise boasting a dramatic 14th-century castle, encircled by olive groves and famous vineyards.
Pienza Tiny Renaissance-planned architectural gem of a town nestled in a scenic hilly landscape.
Cortona Hillside town under the Tuscan sun, with historic churches and museums featuring Etruscan and Renaissance artifacts and art.
Siena Red-brick hilltop city known for its pageantry, Palio horse race, and a stunning traffic-free main square — great anytime but best after dark. It's also a fine home base for exploring the Tuscan countryside with a driving tour of the Crete Senesi.
