In Tuscany, between the beautiful cities of Florence and Siena, there is this stunning hills region famous all around the world for its panoramas and wines, Chianti.
The Chianti is a region of Tuscany synonymous with rolling hills and vineyards.
Chianti area stretches between Florence and Siena and delights visitors with superb views and top-quality red wines.
Chianti is the perfect destination to enjoy ‘la bella vita‘, or the good life, and fill your senses with some of the most impressive countryside Tuscany has to offer.

The Chianti area in Tuscany is one of the most beautiful in the whole region, as well as the most well-known and appreciated by visitors from across the world.
The borders of the Chianti region are not clearly defined but in general it extends over the provinces of Florence and Siena, covering all of the area between the two cities and extending to the east toward the Valdarno and to the west to the Val d'Elsa.
The Chianti wine area extends further beyond the two cities, all around Florence and even toward Arezzo, Pistoia and Montepulciano.
From just driving through the area's roads to admire the view of the vineyards on the hills and magnificent panoramas to stopping to visit wine cellars and tasting great Chianti wines, the Chianti offers this and more.
Hilltop villages, many with their medieval-era buildings and churches still standing, offer an enchanting backdrop to your vacation in Chianti.

One of the most delightful things about Chianti is its never-ending selection of fairs and festivals. Each season comes with its own perks.
For instance, spring treats you to “Festa della stagione bona” (the beginning of the "good season") in Panzano with a parade in period costumes, a medieval play, and food.
Summer offers a “Ferie delle messi” harvest celebration with folkloristic fanfare in San Gimignano.
The fall brings “Festa dell’Uva” - grape harvest celebrations with large market including music, shows, and local food and wine tasting in Impruneta. With all these fairs, you can hardly run out of ideas on what to do in Chianti.
Chianti, more than any other part of Tuscany, is sprinkled with sleepy ancient villages, medieval forts, and rustic estates.

CHIANTI WINE ROADS IN TUSCANY REGION
Visit the Chianti Classico region, the most beautiful countryside of the region.
You will enjoy the scenic landscape, with its rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards.
If you want to plan a trip to Chianti Classico wine-growing region you have to start your trip with the Chiantigiana or otherwise simply known as the 222 road.
This is a road that goes from Florence to Siena and crosses the wide territory with vineyards, olive groves, and a lot of wineries where you can stop to have a wine tasting.
The Chiantigiana is not a properly straight road but goes winding through the hills covered by vineyards. It's pretty easy to get lost and for sure you will need a GPS that could lead you right to the wineries you have planned to get to.
Visit different wineries in Chianti: from the boutique small family winery, to a very old family winery and a very famous winery, where you could taste Chianti Classico and others.

Chianti Classico is the red Italian wine most known in the world. It's the combination of the Sangiovese vine with traditional Cannaiolo, Malvasia, and Trebbiano vine grapes. His color is ruby red, almost garnet.

There are different areas in Tuscany that produce Chianti wine, but here we’re at the heart of the Chianti Classico region.
Here, passionate wine producers produce a very special blend of wine, using 80% of Sangiovese grapes and a few other varieties allowed by the regulation.
Chianti wine is in fact strictly regulated to maintain quality and high standards of production.

What charming town to visit in Chianti area of Tuscany?
Even though is not a big area, Chianti offers many things to see, such as medieval cities and villages, castles and parish churches.

Greve in Chianti
is a lively market town justly popular with tourists. It has a large main square framed by a delightful loggia with a variety of shops and the superbly organised Enoteca Falorni. A welcoming town, Greve is the gateway to the Chianti region in Tuscany, it can be reached by car or public bus in an hour from Florence.

Greve in Chianti is a medieval town located only 30 km away from Florence. Its famous triangular-shape square has been for centuries the place of the Saturday market, setting of the Monday Easter antique fair and the Chianti Classico Exposition.
But there is much more: just a few minutes from the centre you will find a countryside full of vineyards and olive groves, dotted with small medieval villages, castles and villas – all of which have been home to muses, explorers and artists.

Castelnuovo Berardenga sits on the southern border of the Chianti, somewhat overshadowed by Siena.
For better or worse, its fortunes have always been tied to Siena.
In 1555 this Sienese stronghold lost its encircling walls when Siena was defeated by the Florentine-led Medici Grand Duchy. Today, Castelnuovo is special for its peaceful atmosphere and sense of an authentic Tuscan style of living.
The low-key charms include a couple of minor churches and a clocktower, remodelled from the original fortifications.
Admire Vicolo dell'Arco, with its steep stone staircase and decorative arch.
Such charms won’t detain you for long but it’s a soothing spot for contemplating the slow pace of life outside bigger Tuscan towns.
In fact, Castelnuovo is a designated Città Slow for this reason.
Beyond this former stronghold are a cluster of minor villas and wine estates.
Essentially, treat Castelnuovo as a stepping stone to Siena and the southern Chianti.

Panzano in Chianti is a quiet holiday place located at 498 metres above the sea level, halfway between Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, along the road linking Fierenze and Siena.
In Panzano you can admire one the the most important Romanesque churches of the whole Chianti region: the Pieve of St Leolino.
Perched nearly 500 meters above sea level, here you can take a walk through the old village and visit the church of San Leolino, one of the most important Romanesque churches of the Chianti area.
It holds beautiful works by artists such as Giovanni della Robbia and Raffaelino del Garbo.
Panzano in Chianti is also well-known for Vino al Vino, a wine festival held on the third weekend in September, and home to the famous butcher Dario Cecchini.

Radda is the most attractive of all Chianti‘s small towns and one of the best places to visit in this area.
It had a glorious past that put it at the centre of the area’s tumultuous history. Radda in Chianti was in fact the headquarters of the Chianti League, the military-administrative league founded by Florence in the 13th century to protect these territories from Siena’s clutches.

Castellina in Chianti is one of the most important towns in the Chianti region beetween Siena and Florence, and is also very pleasant to explore with a great deal of charm and some interesting monuments.
Castellina in Chianti is actually on the SR222, the so-called Strada Chiantigiana which is the main tourist route through the Chianti region, so very easy to visit when you are exploring this lovely region.

Hilltop Gaiole makes a great stepping-stone to explorations of local inns, wine estates and ancient abbeys.
From the fortified monastery of Badia di Coltibuono to Castello di Brolio. a former Florentine castle with its gaze firmly fixed on its ancient enemy, Siena.
The area abounds in wine estates and gourmet inns but there are enough challenging cycle trails to keep you fit en route.
As for culture, consider day trips to Siena, Florence or charming Castellina.

CHIANTI TOSCANA
